Description

Could we one day have a world community? What would it entail? How could it be accountable? What other methods exist for effectively dealing with the cross-national issues that plague us? Amitai Etzioni raised these questions in his 1965 book "Political Unification: A Comparative Study of Leaders and Forces". Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, Etzioni has revisited "Political Unification". His revised work tests the paradigm that predicts that the conditions under which political unification of previously independent nations may succeed, that the potential of world government remains. This book questions whether traditional systems of international relations can withstand the threatening transnational forces and the globalization of economics and technology. It looks at the rise of transnational organizations, the development of the European Union, and the collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia to argue that only a truely supranational community can counter the worldwide threats of the 21st century.

Author Biography:

Amitai Etzioni is the founder and first president of the Communitarian Network and a university professor at George Washington University. Among his many books are Civic Repentance, The New Golden Rule, The Spirit of Community, and The Moral Dimension.
