Description

In this volume, the author has brought together recognized experts in the fields of growth, processing and characterization of wide band gap semiconductors. The coverage includes growth and contacts of II-VI compounds, processing techniques for SiC, GaN and diamond and materials analysis of all wide band gap semiconductors. The book is compiled for established researchers, as well as those just entering the field. Applications related to both blue/green light emitters and high powerful/high temperature electronics have created a resurgence of interest in wide band semiconductor technology. Currently, more than ten million blue LEDs are sold per month. To broaden the applications spectrum for these components, designers have turned their attention on producing high brightness white LEDs using a blue LED to excite an yttrium aluminum garner phosphor. Such applications could prove the advantage of longer lifetimes than incandescent bulbs. Continuous-wave blue-violet laser diodes for applications in high density optical data storage have also recently been commercialized. Applications in the high power electronics arena include electronics in automobiles, aircraft and large marine vessels, where operation at elevated temperatures is desirable in order to eliminate the bulky cooling systems needed for Si electronics. Such components will be designed to function directly on engineers to lower the weight and cost of the control functions. For example, an estimated 800 pounds could be eliminated on a current F-16 fighter jet if current, highly conductive 4H substrates were available for vertical power devices that would replace conventional Si electronics.
