Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, makes a bet that he can train a Cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party. The play was adapted into My Fair Lady, as well as the movie Pygmalion. It remains popular for its comedy and its commentary on British social classes.

Author Biography:

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was born in Ireland. He wrote a variety of novels, plays, essays, and short stories. He is best known for his plays, which include Pygmalion, Man and Superman, Caesar and Cleopatra, Major Barbara, The Doctor's Dilemma, and others. He is the only person to have won both a Nobel Prize in Literature and an Oscar.
