Set in an accurate backdrop of the Civil War, Rabbit Tracks (41,000 words) is the story of two childhood friends, once as close as brothers, even though one is a slave-boy and the other the spoiled son of the plantation owner. Their relationship unravels quickly as they ship off to war with Daniel as a junior officer and Rabbit as his camp servant. Each face struggles they had not anticipated and were not prepared for. Daniel, sent to 'become a man' and prepare to take his place in the Southern hierarchy, meets nothing but mockery and disdain from the older troops he is to lead. They question his lack of military skill and strongly suspect his very real issue of battlefield cowardice.
