Description

During the 1970s and '80s, the RAF's helicopters went from strength to strength, playing a significant role in the RAF's endeavours both at home and abroad. The Westland Whirlwind was used in the search and rescue (SAR) role before being replaced by the Westland Sea King. Highly visible in their bright yellow liveries, both these aircraft were often seen around the British coastline. The Westland Wessex was used in support helicopter and SAR roles. The AĆ©rospatiale Puma, used both during combat and relief operations, was introduced to RAF service in 1968 and is still being flown today. The instantly recognisable Boeing Chinook came into service in 1981, just in time to take part in the Falklands War, and is also still being used today. With over 180 black and white and colour photographs, this book, the fifth in a series covering British combat aircraft of the 1970s and '80s, showcases the helicopters used by the RAF and their part in the latter stages of the Cold War.
