The author was the head of Romanian intelligence when he defected to the United States in 1978. He was the highest-ranking defector ever from the Eastern bloc and his full-time CIA debriefing lasted for three years. The Romanian people learned the extent of the Ceausescu's corruption when Radio Free Europe began broadcasting excerpts from this book into Romania in 1987. And when the Romanian daily newspaper "Truth" declared itself free after the Ceausescus were toppled, the editors began printing excerpts from this work.
