Description

This work seeks to explore the development and place of Protestantism in early modern society, defined as much in terms of its practice in local communities as in its more public pronouncements from those in authority. This book addresses some of the problems associated with the process of reformation in 16th-century England, particularly in the ambiguities that existed in the various definitions of Protestantism at the time. It raises the question of co-operation between church wardens and ecclesiastical authorities and their local neighbours. There is a close analysis of the parish accounts of Mildenhall. The later part of the book analyzes the responses and initiatives of particular communities to the question of reformation in the 16th century. To reflect certain aspects of the process of reformation, naratives from three market towns in East Anglia have been chosen. The narratives focus on political context, religious motivations and the social factors of reformation.
