Description

The son of an Aberdeenshire minister, William Robertson Smith is a pivotal figure in the movements of Bible criticism, modern exegesis, and the application of anthropology to Hebrew Scripture. In his published works, Robertson Smith sought to examine ancient religion in the context of social conditions, ethnography, and psychology. Though tried for heresy in Great Britain, Robertson Smith was himself a religious Protestant and a well-respected scholar and lecturer, most notably at Cambridge University.
