This book discusses aspects of policy and techno-economic analysis of renewable energy in developing countries. Renewable energy technologies have been one of the most important strategies in addressing sustainable energy development and climate change. The roles of renewable energy in developing countries are vital, which include the accessibility of modern energy services in rural areas, climate change mitigation, energy security, green job creation and eventually improvement of quality of life. Part I of this book focuses on policy and strategy, while Part II focuses on technology development and feasibility. Chapters are contributed by leading experts from the ASEAN Center of Energy, government agencies, industries, and universities from five developing countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam and Bangladesh.

Author Biography:

Hoy-Yen Chan received her PhD from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom; and both master and bachelor degrees from the National University of Malaysia. She is currently a research fellow at the Solar Energy Research Institute, the National University of Malaysia. Her main research is building integrated solar technologies; and she teaches “Energy Policy and Management” and “Solar Energy Technology”  postgraduate courses. She is also an Editorial Board member of the “Journal of Future Cities and Environment” published by the Ubiquity Press. Also, she was the reviewer for the drafts of assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In addition, she contributed in regional curriculum development activities under the initiatives of international organisations, such as the United Nations University (UNU) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).   Prof. Dato' Dr. Kamaruzzaman Sopian obtained hisBSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison, MSc in Energy Resources from the University of Pittsburgh and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Dorgan Solar Laboratory, University of Miami. He is presently a professor in renewable energy and the director of the Solar Energy Research Institute, the National University of Malaysia. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. He has been involved in the field of solar energy for more than thirty years and his main contributions are in solar radiation modeling, alternative material for solar absorber, solar water heating system with integrated storage system, solar desalination, solar cooling, solar assisted drying systems, grid-connected photovoltaic system, thin film silicon solar cells, combined Photovoltaic-thermal or hybrid collector and solar hydrogen production system. He has published over 600 research papers in journals and conferences. Furthermore, he has delivered keynotes speeches at national and international conferences on renewable energy. He is a member of the World Renewable Energy Network based in the United Kingdom. Moreover, he is a member of several national subcommittees on renewable energy by the Malaysian government to promote awareness, market enhancement, policy studies and the renewable energy technologies.
