Description

Over the last twenty years there has been a noticeable increase in interest, not only in the use of rifles, but also in the technical aspects of what makes an accurate rifle. However, much of this information is limited not only to the bolt action rifle but even to certain makes that are favoured above all others. This book deals instead with all types of rifle from flintlock muzzleloaders to synthetic-stocked rifles. It is written in a clear, no-nonsense style based on many years of practical experience and follows the maxim that although theories are of interest, it is only real results that count. Covers all types of rifles from flintlock muzzleloaders, through falling blocks and big doubles to synthetic stocked rifles Examines the history of the rifle, the different types of rifles, the barrel, bullet and the cartridge, and the riflesmith's workshop Discusses rifle maintenance and accuracy, barrel work, action work, stockwork, metal finishing and proof and the law Presents a practical demonstration of how methods and principles of riflesmithing discussed in the book were used to create a bespoke and accurate rifle: the Crowood Rifle AUTHOR: Lewis Potter has had a lifelong interest in firearms. In 1974 he joined a local rifle and pistol club, which gave him the opportunity to obtain, restore and modify his own rifles. In 1987 he and his wife set up business as gunsmiths and riflemakers with considerable help and guidance from the late, well-respected Cheltenham gunsmith and riflemaker, G L Hart. Lewis has written two other highly acclaimed books for Crowood - The Art of Gunsmithing - The Shotgun [2006] and Deer Stalking and Management [2008]. SELLING POINTS: A clearly written, wide-ranging and easily accessible guide to this highly skilled craft Essential reading for all those with an interest in riflesmithing and rifles, those with an interest in shooting and those who take part in country pursuits All types of rifles and their origins are examined and detecting, correcting faults, re-barrelling, stockwork and finishing are also all covered in considerable detail Lewis Potter is a highly regarded and accomplished riflesmith whose career stretches back well over four decades ILLUSTRATIONS 127 colour photographs *
