Description

This book introduces the working principle, materials, and design of seawater batteries and reviews the current state-of-the-art technologies in cells and modules. This book looks at the characteristics of seawater, then reviews the basic electrochemical processes involved in the storage of electrical charge in seawater batteries, and then discusses the development of anode, cathode, and membrane materials, and cell engineering progress. In particular, Chapter 3 contains the latest research and development results for rechargeable seawater batteries. The book has been written for a broad readership including graduate students, academic and industrial researchers working on sustainable, low-cost energy.

Author Biography:

Youngsik Kim received his PhD from Iowa State University. He is a professor of Energy and Chemical Engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), and the director of the Seawater Resources Technology (SRT) Center. His research focuses on materials and devices for energy storage and conversion. Currently, he carries out active research in seawater resource fields, which includes rechargeable batteries that use seawater as an active electrode, offering a low-cost route to large-scale energy storage.  Wang-Geun Lee received his PhD in Chemistry from the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), and he is a post-doc researcher of Energy and Chemical Engineering at UNIST. His research focuses on functional materials for electrocatalyst, adsorbent, and its applications. Currently, he is conducting research on electrode materials and application technologies in energy systems using seawater, such as seawater batteries.
