Two PhD students at California's Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin devised a powerful search engine that became the all-conquering Google. The two young men founded their company in September 1998 and it has since grown to become hugely dominant, as a brand, a search engine, a center of artificial intelligence and a source of data collection.
