Appreciating how others see the world leads to enlightenment. The film portrays a little-known part of Japan's history in which preachers from the west try to introduce Christianity in the face of the established customs and social order of Japan. The price is persecution and torture. A central question is, does anyone have the right to make others suffer for their beliefs. We are left to ponder, is the mission to Japan ultimately a failure – or a foothold in understanding-
