Description

In 2011 - 2012 my daughter, Jessica volunteered 150 hours at a non-profit organization that rescued large-breed dogs and trained them to be assistance dogs for disabled military veterans. Most of these veterans bore the scars of war inside where they could not easily be seen. Some were recluses and hadn't been out to public places for 40 years. Some had traumatic brain injuries, some had physical disabilities, some were just changed forever inside. Jessica witnessed firsthand the positive impact that these assistance dogs had on the lives of the veterans she met while there. She also gave her time, her love and her heart to each and every dog and then willingly gave them up to the veteran who needed them most. This book is a small glimpse into that journey of hers, and, also meant to highlight the importance of such programs for military veterans who have suffered the effects of combat in their bodies and in their souls. May we continue to show our gratitude for those who secure our freedoms. Major (retired) Elizabeth Ciufo Waters US Army Combat Veteran, Desert Storm US Air Force Reserve Retired

Author Biography:

Elizabeth Waters is a former US Army paratrooper and US Army combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War (Desert Shield and Desert Storm) from August 1990-April of 1991, where she served with the XVIII Airborne Corps as an Intelligence Officer. She served six years of active duty in the US Army, four years in the US Army Reserve and thirteen years in the US Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Major in 2005. During that time, she married a US Air Force officer and pilot and traipsed around the country with him and later, their two children (twins), for 24 years, homeschooling the twins, taking care of many airmen and their families, and being involved in many airmen and military family-oriented agencies and programs. She and her husband are both currently retired and living on a small hobby farm in northern California. Major Waters spends her time gardening, preserving what they grow, reading, and hosting a successful Airbnb, while pursuing her passion for writing, and enjoying time with her now young adult children. This is her first published work. She has a second book coming out soon that is a memoir of her time in the Gulf War entitled, A Shoe in the Sand-A Look Behind for the Journey Ahead. She is also excited to begin creating stories from her memories as a young girl growing up on a small farm in southwestern Colorado, for a possible children's series called Better with Betsy (based on her childhood name growing up).
