This collection of papers contains contributions to the language island section of the First International Conference of the International Society for German Dialectology (IGDD), which took place in Marburg an der Lahn, Germany in March 2003. In addition, further contributions are included on research done in language island regions of the world. The focus of the essays is the socio-linguistic, dialectological and contact-linguistic survey of the development of German language islands across the world as registered at the beginning of the 21st century.

Author Biography:

Die Herausgeberinnen: Nina Berend ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut fur Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim und Professorin fur Germanistik an der Universitat Heidelberg. Ihre Forschungsinteressen umfassen Dialektologie und Varietaten des Deutschen sowie Gebiete der Soziolinguistik. Sie ist Herausgeberin des Wolga-deutschen Sprachatlasses. Elisabeth Knipf-Komlosi ist Professorin fur germanistische Linguistik am Germanistischen Institut der Eoetvoes Lorand Universitat Budapest. Ihre Hauptarbeitsgebiete sind Wortbildung, Soziolinguistik, Varietatenlinguistik und Sprachinselforschung. Sie ist Sektionsleiterin der Sprachinselsektion der IGDD. The Editors: Nina Berend is a researcher at the Institute for the German Language in Mannheim and professor of German at the University of Heidelberg. Her research field includes dialectology and varieties of German as well as areas of socio-linguistics. She is the editor of the Volga-German Language Atlas. Elisabeth Knipf-Komlosi is professor and chair of German linguistics at the Institute of German Studies at the Lorand Eoetvoes University Budapest (Hungary). Her research interests include word formation, socio-linguistics, language varieties, and language islands. She is the chair of the language island section of the International Society for German Dialectology (IGDD).
