Description

An analysis of the reasons for the continuing success of the "Star Trek" phenomenon. The author traces its overall development and comments on how the differences between the 1990s and the 1960s series reflect changes in the mass media environment during this period. He examines "Star Trek" as a series of generic and mythological texts, compares TV and filmed versions, explores its "cult" appeal and looks in detail at its psychological, social and political themes.

Author Biography:

CHRIS GREGORY is the author of Be Seeing You: Decoding The Prisoner , a critical analysis of the cult 1960s TV series, which - like the present volume - provides a new approach to the aesthetics of television. He is also a dramatist, novelist and the author of a book of poems, Taking Shape as well as one of the winners of the Lancaster Litfest poetry competition (1991). He is currently teaching courses in Film and Media Studies for Lancaster University.
