Why and How to Pray Taraweeh in Islam Tarawih is a sunnah mu'akkadah - meaning a verified sunnah that the Prophet used to do consistently. He technically used to pray qiyaam al-layl (optional nightly prayers) year-round, out of devotion to Allah.
