Description

Te Taua Moana: Warriors Of The Sea – The Royal NZ Navy Band

This musical and cultural showcase combines the talented musicians of the Royal New Zealand Navy Band, the RNZN Pipes and Drums and the sailors of Te Taua Moana Marae. The programme begins with a Karanga that invites the listener to enjoy this musical celebration of the Royal New Zealand Navy in its 75th year. The album explores the origins of naval music and features a selection of traditional naval marches, sea shanties and waiata. The Big Band echoes the era of 1940s swing music and moves toward the present day paying tribute to the naval traditions of faith and remembrance.

Featured on the album is a specially commissioned work by New Zealand composer Anthony Ritchie. The call of the bugle and beating of drums take the listener toward the end of the journey before Band, Cultural Group and Piper join together for a heartfelt farewell.
