Description

From 1999-2004, Dr. Ilana Newman, had a monthly column in Twist magazine, where she answered sex and body questions that teen girls did not feel comfortable asking their friends, parents, or doctors. Over the years, Dr. Newman has met several regular readers of the column who told her how helpful and reassuring it was to read the questions and answers of other girls with similar concerns. Some even told her that if it wasn't for Dr. Newman's advice, they might have done things that would have put their health and safety at risk. Recently, a former reader of Dr. Newman's column (who is now the mother of a young teenage girl) expressed disappointment that there currently is not a similar source of this information for her daughter and her daughter's friends. This motivated Dr. Newman to dust off her old issues of Twist magazine and make this important advice widely available once again. Other than some minor revisions and updates, the questions and answers in this book are the same as appeared in the column and are the same advice Dr. Newman would give to a teen girl today. This book contains all three of the previously released Teen Doc Tells All ebooks (Body Changes, Period Problems, and Sex Stuff).

Author Biography:

Ilana Newman, MD graduated from the University of Arizona with three bachelor's degrees in four years. Before starting medical school at the University of Arizona, she did an internship at MTV in New York, where she worked on the alternative music show 120 Minutes. This experience fueled her interest in adolescent health issues. While in medical school, she found some interesting ways to combine her media experience with medicine, including medical school electives with the medical news unit at the CBS Evening News and KROQ's Loveline show. Dr. Newman chose to specialize in family medicine instead of pediatrics because most adolescent health problems (sex, drugs, eating disorders, acne, sports injuries, depression, etc) are not problems common in little kids. She completed her family medicine residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and became certified to use acupuncture in New York State. Afterwards, she did a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center in New York. She appeared in health segments on the Oxygen Network and had a monthly column in Twist magazine. Later, she wrote and hosted a daily online medical news show for doctors. Many years later, Dr. Newman did another fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at the University of Miami. She currently treats patients with advanced cancer and other life-limiting conditions, helping to manage the symptoms from their disease or treatments. She is a voluntary assistant professor in family medicine at the University of Miami, where she helps teach the acupuncture course for physicians.
