Sense or sensibility? Morality or passion? Liz and Juan struggle to choose which paths to follow as their characters develop throughout the novel. The reader participates in their inner conflicts through authentic streams of consciousness, experiencing their fears and weaknesses and also their struggle against either the old-fashioned academic system in Europe or the brutal traditional methods of horse dressage.
