Description

This Lionni title, which ranks #8 in sales among the 40 or so Lionni titles, has tremendous currency today as a strong literacy title and as one of the few anti-war children's books available. Though we have it in paperback, we feel it can be sold successfully in hardcover again like other top Lionni titles. It has recently been picked up by several anti-war web sites. From beloved Caldecott winning picture book creator Leo Lionni, this fable is about sticking together and sending a message of peace to those in charge. When a fierce wind threatens to blow all the little letters out of the alphabet tree, they must band together in words-and then sentences-to create a message that's even stronger than the wind- peace on earth. With their newfound knowledge, there's nothing the letters can't do in this gentle parable about the power of the written word.

Author Biography:

Leo Lionni, an internationally known designer, illustrator, and graphic artist, was born in Holland and lived in Italy until he came to the United States in 1939. He was the recipient of the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was honored posthumously in 2007 with the Society of Illustrators' Lifetime Achievement Award. His picture books are distinguished by their enduring moral themes, graphic simplicity and brilliant use of collage, and include four Caldecott Honor Books- Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Hailed as "a master of the simple fable" by the Chicago Tribune, he died in 1999 at the age of 89.
