The Cane in the Cupboard is a collection of memoir essays that traces the arc of the author's life from childhood to early adulthood as a person who has Cerebral Palsy and siblings with disabilities. This book is an examination of personal experiences through the lens of disability issues, such as: internalized ableism, caregiving, and the disability/ability binary. Equal parts scene, reflection, and commentary, these essays are explore a variety of subject matter that will encourage an audience to contemplate the complexities of family dynamics, self-image, and interpersonal relationships in general.

Author Biography:

Hailey Hughes is an essayist and poet. She holds a BA in Creative Writing from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. She proudly served as a J. William Fulbright US Student Grantee in 2018-2019 in Cork, Ireland. Hailey received her MA in Creative Writing from University College Cork in 2020. Her work has appeared in Marshall University's literary magazine, Et Cetera, Thoreau's Rooster, and most recently, The Quarryman. She has contributed personal essays to The Mighty, an online platform for people who have disabilities and caregivers. This is her first book. When not writing, Hailey is a Human Resources Assistant with the US Bureau of the Fiscal Service, a department of the US Department of the Treasury.
