Description

John "was born to be a Warrior." He was a "hard-punching, fearless officer." With his unique leadership style, the product of Marine Corps and Army experience, and innovative tactics, he led his loyal, dedicated and competent officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted troopers into the dense jungles north of Saigon to flush out and destroy the North Vietnamese Regulars and battle-hardened Vietcong who didn't believe the armored cavalry could penetrate their sanctuaries. He prayed and he fought, but he never forgot the heroes he led through Hell, nor those that were wounded or killed. Some troopers called him "Killer Cong Conley," and he was also called "The Point of the Spear." He was THE CAVALRYMAN.

Author Biography:

Born and raised in suburban Detroit. John Joined the Marines as soon as eligible. Five years later he joined the Army to attend OCS and became an officer. After Airborne, Armor and Jungle training, he served a year and a half in the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Troop Commander in and around the jungles north of Saigon in Vietnam. He was an improvisor, and a successful combat leader, but suffered terribly from his troopers who were killed or injured in battle. John has come back to tell the story of how with a prayer on his lips he and his awesome Cavalrymen charged through the gates of Hell.
