How does the author keep all the characters “in her head”- The book is superbly written, the scenes, characters, situations are never left wanting for lack of description. Not a history buff, I found many of the historical characters superfluous to the plot – but the author obviously researched well. The story line moves as a stunningly fast pace at times, and at others, like moving through treacle. The children's books did not play the role that I thought they would (after reading the blurb), but still an incredible insight into life at those times through families of a less conservative bent of thinking / living. A great holiday read.
