Description

Who's in charge here? That was a central dilemma of the fifteenth century. The Kings of England and France were fighting over control of French territories - the Hundred Years' War. The Houses of York and Lancaster were squabbling over the English throne - the Wars of the Roses. In 1475, the Treaty of Picquigny gave a formal end to the Hundred Years' War; but the Wars of the Roses went on. In the end, the answer to the question was simple: the person in charge was the nearby noble with the armed men. The higher-ups were busy. It was enough to drive you to an abbey to live in holy peace. That didn't always work. This is the story of Margaret of Shaftesbury, Abbess of Deer Abbey, who had to guide her small flock through these unruly years.

Author Biography:

Monica Ferris has written under many names. One of the first was Margaret of Shaftesbury. This book is put together from four "chapbooks" she wrote back in the 1980s as a study for a character she'd'd invented: Margaret of Shaftesbury, Abbess. She lived from 1400 to 1485, mostly in a small nunnery in the foothills of the Cotswolds called the Abbey of the White Stag (Abatia Cervi Albi, after the vision of St. Eustace). AKA Deer Abbey. She wrote about one a year, and now the chapbooks have been drawn together to make a novel of a little over two hundred pages, if you include the endnotes. The chapbooks were thoroughly researched but lightly written, self-published, and earned her a Laurel in the Society for Creative Anachronism.
