"Brutal Reality"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a hard hitting story depicting Maori Life before colonisation. Spoken in Maori with sub titles this adds to the quality and drama of the movie. This is harsh reality where mana is everything. Many well known actors with adult “Boy” in the lead role. Well worth watching for those interested in our history

"Stunning NZ movie"
5 stars"

Why haven't we seen more action movies like this- A good story line set in our Kiwi landscape with real – and slim – Maori warriors who truly look the part of their ancestors. This could be a new genre – let's have another!

"Glimpse into history"

An interesting look into a part of history that is little known outside of New Zealand before white colonization.Well acted depiction of how life would have been.

The Dead Lands

After his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery, Hongi, a Maori chieftain's teenage son, must avenge his father's murder in order to bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones.

Vastly outnumbered by a band of villains, Hongi's only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Warrior, a ruthless fighter who has ruled the area for years.

Critic Reviews:

  • " It's in te reo but The Dead Lands never feels like it's trying too hard to say anything important. All the same, it may well become a very important film. " – Russell Baillie
  • " It certainly makes viewers reluctant to hassle anyone carrying a patu with authority, which is something the film can hang its hat on. " – Joe Bendel
  • " Highly entertaining. " – Kam Williams
