Author Biography:

Archie Brown is Professor of Politics at Oxford University and a Fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford, From 1964 to 1971 he taught at Glasgow University. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1991, a founding academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in 1999, and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
