Description

Following on the heels of our successful What It Takes to Be no.1 comes this follow up book, which features quotes, stories and wisdom from the legendary coach, delivered by his only son Vince Jr. Vince Lombardi represents nothing less than the soul of the game of professional football. As coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959 to 1967, Coach Lombardi transformed a perennial loser into a juggernaut, winning NFL titles in 1961, 1962 and 1965, and Super Bowls I and II in 1966 and 1967. The coach's uncanny ability to inspire greatness and test the limits of physical endurance is what made him the standard by which all other coaches have been measured. Lombardi's oft repeated refrain, "Winning is not everything, it's the only thing," may be the most repeated words in all of sports. However, there were hundreds of other pithy words and phrases articulated by the legendary leader that would interest Lombardi fans and sports enthusiasts alike. Organized alphabetically, the book will include Lombardi's words on everything from adversity to winning. Here are examples: On Adversity: "How does a man meet his failures? That is the measure of the man. If he does not quit or curl up, he has the right stuff in him. Be a hard loser." On Character: "Character, rather than education, is a man's greatest need and man's greatest safeguard, because character is far superior to, far higher than, the intellect." On Honesty: "Skilled ignorance is often more powerful than knowledge and honesty - but only temporarily, only for a short time. In the long run, knowledge and honesty will pay off." On Leadership: "Leadership, with the willingness to use it, is based upon truth and character. It must have truth in its purpose, and willpower in its character." More than a quote book, The Essential Vince Lombardi will also feature commentary and photos throughout the book, delivered by the one person who could truly understand Vince Lombardi's unrelenting passion for winning, his son Vince. By organizing the book as a lexicon, readers will be able to turn to any topic to glean Lombardi wisdom. This will make The Essential Vince Lombardi an invaluable tool and reference book that business people and sports fans turn to for inspiration and practical advice. The key to the book will be execution. Interspersed with the quotes will be commentary and rare photographs taken from Vince Jr's collection, as well as "Lombardi Lessons" throughout the book. This will help distinguish this book from just a "quote book," as well as other books that have preceded it.
