Two foreign sovereigns have landed in Ireland. One, James II, has come from his exile in France. The other, William III, has come from his new dominion, England. The first wants his old kingdom back, the second wants to end a 'distraction' and to get back to his war with King Louis XIV of France. Into this maelstrom lands a young lawyer, a graduate of the Irish College in Paris. His task is restore the confiscated estates of dispossessed Catholics, which in a country forced to surrender to a Calvinist Dutchman, is no easy challenge. He is also the first Catholic to be called to the bar in 50 years and will be the last for another century and a half. Making matters more complicated, he has fallen in love.
