The Great Gilly Hopkins
A feisty foster kid’s outrageous scheme to be reunited with her birth mother has unintended consequences in The Great Gilly Hopkins, a funny, poignant and inspiring new movie from the creators of Bridge to Terabithia.
Gilly Hopkins has seen more than her share of foster homes. Abandoned by her mother as a baby, Gilly makes it her mission not to need anyone—not her earnest social worker Ellis, her dedicated teacher Miss Harris or her tenaciously sociable classmate Agnes—and certainly not her new foster mother Mamie Trotter. In an effort to escape Trotter’s endlessly loving care, Gilly concocts a plan that she believes will bring her mother running to her rescue.
But when the ploy blows up in Gilly’s face it threatens to ruin the only chance she’s ever had to be part of a real family. Based on Katherine Paterson’s award-winning novel, The Great Gilly Hopkins is a hilarious, big-hearted and wildly entertaining film for the entire family.
Critic Reviews:
- " The Great Gilly Hopkins has its enjoyable moments – Bates' entertaining, scenery-chewing turn providing many of them – and its themes are refreshingly complex for a film targeted to kids. " – Frank Scheck
- " While uneven in places, “The Great Gilly Hopkins” works because it boasts an actress tough enough for the title role. " – Peter Debruge
- " The title character is a child, but two adult actors, Kathy Bates and Glenn Close, really give “The Great Gilly Hopkins” its considerable heart. " – Neil Genzlinger
