I love anything to do with Halloween – the night, not just the classic movie – and have always been fascinated by the American trend for the ‘Haunted House’ attractions that pop up every year, each one vying to be the scariest, the bloodiest, the most outré… THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT is a ‘found footage’ film that documents the attempts of five friends to track down a legendary ‘underground’ ‘Haunt’ that appears in a different location every year and is rumoured to be something very much out of the ordinary. The very fact this ‘Haunt’ is only advertised cryptically on the ‘Dark Web’ should have been warning enough not to go looking, but our protagonists doggedly keep up the search, even when it becomes apparent that they themselves might be becoming the hunted… In particular one VERY p*ssed-off clown, and a young girl wearing a full head china doll mask begin to creep them out, and I admit that this film started to get under my skin too. As the mood darkens and the weirdness edges into the danger zone, you might find yourself as terrified as our would-be ‘Scooby Gang’, and the claustrophobic finale nearly finished me off, featuring as it does one of my most dreaded scenarios… Let's just say these ‘pesky kids’ don't come out on top in more ways than one. In summary, THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT is ideal late night viewing for an October evening, offering up scary ‘Tricks’ and ‘Treats’ in equal measure. The Blu-ray offers up good enough picture quality, though bear in mind it is made to look like it is shot on DV by amateur filmmakers, so it won't blow you away. The ‘Haunts’ featured in the film are worth the price of admission alone, as it were… Recommended!
