Description

Each of Cardinael's hundred questions has two geometric interpretations; one as a question in land survey and the other as a question in pure mathematics. The fascinating and at times surprising consequence is that the answer to one of these interpretations sheds light on not only the solution to the other but also on its problem-solving context. This book is a critical edition of Cardinael's work that includes a biography of Cardinael, a new translation of the manuscript, and a detailed mathematical commentary on each question and its solutions. The attention paid by Sitter and Heeffer to the techniques and methods employed by Cardinael in solving the questions makes a unique contribution to understanding to both pure and applied mathematics as well as the symbiotic relationship between them.
