Description

The Irish Wolfhound is a large breed of domestic sighthound that originates from Ireland. The breed's name originates from its purpose - wolf hunting with dogs - rather than from the breed's wolf-like appearance. The Irish Wolfhound is a very old breed and it is believed that the breed's ancestors were brought to Ireland as early as 7000 B.C. The breed's ancestors were originally bred to be war hounds and hunting dogs. The Irish continued this tradition, but also began to breed the Irish Wolfhound for the purposes of guarding their homes and protecting their livestock. During the British conquest of Ireland, it became law that only nobility could own a Irish Wolfhound which made the breed an unpopular national symbol due to its connection to the British invasion. However in modern years, the Irish Wolfhound has had an increase in popularity and has actually been used as the symbol for both rugby codes. The American Kennel Club states that the Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dog breeds. The breed has a muscular build similar to that of a Greyhound. The breed is also known to be incredibly athletic, active and agile. The breed's coat comes in the following colorations: red, brindle, grey, black, fawn, white and wheaten. Due to the breed's hunting history, the Irish Wolfhound is both fast enough to catch a wolf, and muscular enough to kill it. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Irish Wolfhound. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Irish Wolfhound with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Irish Wolfhound is known to be an intelligent, introverted, quiet and reserved breed. They are an easygoing animal that can easily create a strong loving bond with their family unit. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Irish Wolfhound has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Irish Wolfhound has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Irish Wolfhound's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Irish Wolfhound, raising your Irish Wolfhound from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between!
