Author Biography:

JAMES R. MARTIN is Professor in Linguistics at the University of Sydney. Over the past two decades he has led major research projects exploring literacy development in Australian secondary and primary schools. Among his publications are English Text: System and Structure, Working With Discourse (with David Rose), Re/Reading the Past (edited with Ruth Wodak). PETER R.R. WHITE is Lecturer in Linguistics and Media at the University of Adelaide, South Australia. His most recent publications include 'Appraisal - the language of evaluation and stance' in The Handbook
