Excerpt from The Pastor's Remembrances: A Discourse Delivered Before the First Parish in Cambridge, on Sunday, May 27, 1855 Twenty-five years ago, - ou the fourth Sunday in May, 1830, - I began my public ministry among you, taking for my text the words, We preach not our selves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. I am not unwilling to remember and repeat them to-day. Humbly as I estimate the past, I feel at least that I have not been untrue to the spirit which they breathe, nor to the pur poses which glowed in my soul, as I first ascended the altar, and entered on my work. According to the abil ity which God has given me, I have labored among you from that time until now, preaching Christ, and the truth of which Christ is the centre and the life; and devoting myself to the service of my people in the ministrations of the pulpit and the varied offices of the pastoral care.
