Set in 1957 in a small Irish village, The Playboys, is an emotional story of a fiercely independent woman caught between the desires of two men in a world on the edge of change. A young woman, Tara Maguire (Robin Wright) scandalizes her provincial Irish village in the 1950s by having a baby out of a wedlock, and refusing to name the father. The result is a jealous battle between two worlds; the traditional, conservative safety of Sergeant Hegarty (Finney) versus the free-wheeling abandon of Tom Casey (Aidan Quinn).
