Description

Excerpt from The Radiant: December, 1917 The jail was one of those structures which are seen so fre quently in the small villages in England. It was built of red brick, with the prison cells in the rear and the keeper's resi dence in front. Its entire front was covered with creeping vines. When in bloom these must have been a thing of rare beauty; but now they were withered and drooped in the rain, with a discouraged air giving the building a desolate, lonely appearance. The gloomy bleakness of the jail was quite in keeping, however, with the mood of Dreyfuss and Jackson as they hurried to it from the train. Their first glimpse of the building was from a hill overlooking it from the rear, which showed them the cells with their barred windows, looking down into a little, barren yard surrounded by a tall brick. Wall thickly studded on top with broken glass. As Dreyfuss gazed on the ill - omened structure dimply seen through the sad gray drizzle, the hopelessness of the situation oppressed more and more. He felt as though some destructive monster had Ruth in its clutches. How can I save her from the fate that seems to be closing in on her? What can I do 2 were the thoughts that kept racing through his mind as he approached silently in the rain and stood while Jackson rang the bell at the jail door.
