How siege was laid by the noble Duke of Nemours to Ravenna; and divers attacks made upon it on Good Friday, wherein the French were repulsed. When the gentle Duke of Nemours arrived before Ravenna, he assembled all the Captains, to determine what was to be done; for the French camp began to suffer greatly for lack of provisions, which were conveyed to it with much difficulty. Bread and wine were already beginning to fail, because the Venetians had cut off the supplies on one side, and the Spanish army held all the coast of Romagna; so that the adventurers were under the necessity of subsisting on meat and cheese. Another cross accident had also happened, unforeseen either by the Duke of Nemours or any of the Captains, namely, the Emperor's having sent written orders to the Captains of the Lansquenets on their lives to retire as soon as ever they had seen his letter, and not to engage with the Spaniards.
