This stunning edition reproduces Coleridge's epic poem from a highly original version created in 1910 by Willy Pogany. The Hungarian-born artist's interpretation of the strange and gripping tale, told by the sole survivor of a cursed voyage, constitutes a wondrously dramatic marriage of words and images. Pogany's vision offers the print equivalent of a medieval manuscript, rich in sumptuously hand-lettered text, decorative borders, illuminated scripts, and numerous marginal illustrations as well as 20 full-page color plates. This edition of the rare volume also includes an unabridged, easy-to-read version of the poem in standard type.

Author Biography:

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was a founder of the English Romantic movement and a member of the Lake Poets. Although less well known than his contemporaries Wordsworth and Shelley, he created an enormously influential body of poetry and literary criticism. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is his masterpiece. In addition to his work as an illustrator of classics, Hungarian-born artist Willy Pogany (1882-1955) served as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. He was also an author and teacher whose instructive manuals include Dover's Drawing Lessons.
