Description

Sheridan (1751-1816) was an Irish satirist, playwright and poet, and long-term owner of the London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He also served as a Whig MP for 32 years and is buried at Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. This play which was widely admired when first performed at Drury Lane Theatre on 8 May 1777 is still regularly performed worldwide.
