When Daniel's class hatches chicks as a science project, he adopts them. When he finds out that his favorite bird, Peepers, isn't a hen but a rooster, and therefore illegal to keep in the city of Portland, the Secret Chicken Society is quickly formed to save Peepers. This warmhearted chapter book about an environmentally-conscious family will provide plenty of clucks and lots of chuckles for young readers.

Judy Cox is a celebrated author of children's book and elementary school teacher. Her titles include Go to Sleep, Groundhog! and One Is a Feast for Mouse A Thanksgiving Tale. She lives in Oregon. Amanda Haley's illustrations for Reading to Peanut by Leda Schubert were noted as being "colorful" and "energetic" by Kirkus Reviews. Amanda has written and illustrated picture books and easy readers as well as designed paper goods and stationery. She lives in Milford, Ohio.
