Description

The interest of the choice of this theme is due to various elements. First, Matthew is the first gospel in the New Testament and the first miracle of Jesus narrated by Matthew is the healing of the leper. Hence it is the first miracle of the NT itself. Why Matthew has chosen this to be the first one while it is not so in other gospels? Secondly, after the powerful words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5 to 7) chapters 8 and 9 narrates the powerful deeds of Jesus. Both these powerful words and deeds constitute the mission of Jesus as we understand from the summary statements as in 4, 23 and 9, 35. The powerful deeds of Jesus in chapters 8 and 9 begin with this particular miracle of healing of the leper. This primary position of this miracle in the New Testament and in the gospel of Matthew particularly reveals its importance. Church which continues the mission of Jesus may have some important insights in her mission today. Leprosy and its consequent socio-religious-cultural marginalization of the leper and his reintegration to the mainstream of society by Jesus point to the social situation of the modern society. Jesus who came to save the mankind in all its aspects through his words and deeds set a plan of universal eternal mission. So the significance of this healing miracle of Jesus is not restricted to the time of Jesus; it is still significant for today. The exegetical theological study of this text will certainly throw light on the mission of the Church today.
