Enjoyed the movie
A real classic in every sense. Superb acting and directing. The theme of the life of St. Bernadette doesn't age, and is wonderfully handled in this film. I first saw it over 30 yrs ago and it has lost none of it's magic.
Jennifer Jones won the Academy Award for Best Actress in her screen debut. The film also won Oscars in 1943 for Best Cinematography, Music (Scoring) and Art Direction/Interior Decoration.
Bernadette Soubirous (Jones) is a sickly 14-year-old girl who sees a vision of a “beautiful lady”, and never suffers from her illness again. Moreover, a fountain suddenly materialises near her vision that seems to heal visitors who bathe in it.
Unspoiled by her apparent gift, Bernadette nonetheless suffers the prejudices of those around her in this extraordinary, inspiring film that also stars Vincent Price, Charles Bickford and Lee J. Cobb.
Critic reviews
“A conscientious, dignified and moving film version of Franz Werfel's story.”
“A remarkably good moving picture-an improvement on Franz Werfel's reverent novel about the French peasant girl who saw the Blessed Virgin and, with her help, discovered a miraculously healing spring at Lourdes.”
“A beautifully told tale of a girl whose quiet devotion and determination shines through.”
