The Soul in Paraphrase: Poetry as Prayer is an anthology of poems selected for use in planning retreats around the theme of poetry as prayer. In addition, a resource guide consisting of discussion questions, writing prompts, and references for further reading is included. All are poets included are well known and have been much loved through the centuries, thus reminding readers that much of the poetry we have already read and have grown to appreciate is, indeed, the poetry of prayer.

Author Biography:

James Green has worked as a naval officer, deputy sheriff, high school English teacher, professor of education, and administrator in both public schools and universities. His academic publications include three books, as well as numerous monographs and articles in professional journals. His poetry has appeared in literary magazines in England, Ireland, and the USA; and a collection of his poems, Stations of the Cross (Finishing Line Books), was nominated by the publisher for the Modern Language Association's Conference on Christianity and Literature 2009 Book of the Year. He holds B.A. and M.S. degrees in English and Education from Missouri State University, a Ph.D. in Education from Saint Louis University, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles. Sheryl O'Sullivan has been an elementary teacher and principal and a professor of teacher education during her 40-year career. Her academic publications include five books and numerous monographs articles in professional journals. In addition, she has published several works for children in such magazines as Cricket. Her doctorate is from Ball State University in early childhood education and literacy, and she holds an M.A. in Religion from Azusa Pacific University. Currently a professor of literacy at Gordon State College in Georgia, her vocation includes leading retreats organized around various themes, among them poetry as prayer.
