A refreshing new approach to an apocalyptic disaster theme story – set here in lovely New Zealand. The story is focused more on the struggle for survivors to rebuild their worlds again, rather than on the destruction that came before – a story that celebrates life and not glorifies death as in so many other types of stories of this genre. Right from the first few words, I was drawn into Sandy's world and had to keep turning the pages just to see what happens next. What will she do- what will she find- who are they- and what happened to her family- Eventually Sandy, hurt and with serious life threatening infections, finds others. Will they accept her into their small group- or will Sandy, a loner for so long, manage to find it within her a pathway to becoming part of a group and start the beginnings of a small community in a brave, new world. These are questions that flow through your mind as you accompany Sandy on her journey and you just have to keep reading to find out more. Fantastic that book two is now available as well. An excellent read and thrilling that its set in my own country for once and even more so, in towns that I personally know.
