Ellie Whitney holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Washington University, St. Louis, She lived in Tallahassee from 1970 to 2006, where she taught at the Florida State University, authored many books, and for five years wrote columns for the Tallahassee Democrat as "The Everyday Environmentalist." A founding member of the Big Bend Climate Action Team, Ellie advocates the societywide phaseout of fossil fuels used for energy and the use of energy efficiency and renewable resources in their place. She has built and/or renovated several solar buildings and has driven nothing but all-electric and hybrid cars since 1990. Ellie says the coal plant fight was the most biggest battle of her life. She hopes that the story told here will be helpful to other activists fighting the coal industry.
