Description

While this material is rather short, is profound enough to show the way in how the three powers which drive Cuban dance music are articulated. Here are explained, in novel ways, some important topics of Cuban popular music, considered quite complex; and other unknown aspects, despite their prominent presence within any arrangement or musical composition. Within these topics, you will find some not stylistically related to Cuban music, but if rhythmically related.

Author Biography:

Edgar Hernández was born in Cuba. He began his musical career in Santiago de Cuba as bassist and musical director of a charanga band called "Sierra Cristal". From 1980 through 1982 he was a member of the band Repeché in Havana, which included the singer Pio Leiva, who attained international acclaim with the "Buena vista social club". Edgar also worked as bassist, arranger, composer, and musical director in such notable Cuban bands as Conjunto Casino, Orquesta Benny Moré, Orquesta Tropicana, and Conjunto Rumbavana. In 1994 Edgar Hernandez arrived in Los Angeles where he formed the band Charanga Cubana. He has recorded three CDs with this band, and Charanga Cubana has also been featured in the Calle Ocho festivals in Miami as well as Latin music events in Southern California. In addition to his work as a bassist, composer, and arranger Edgar has also dedicated a lot of time to studying the technical and fundamental aspects of Cuban music, and he has authored for books on the subject, "Morfología del Tumbao" (para piano), "La Verdadera esencia rítmica de la Clave del Son cubano", "El Arte de Hacer Música Cubana", and "Los tres poderes de la Música cubana". Edgar also teaches applied music (bass) at California State University, Los Angeles. In 2007 Edgar was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Charanga Cubana's CD "A Comer Chicharrón". His music has also appeared in the soundtracks of the films and television series "Club Dread", "The Bases Are Loaded", "Aquamarine", "Be Kind Rewind", "One Life to Live" and "Cane". Edgar Hernandez currently maintains a busy schedule as a musician and educator in the Los Angeles area.
