Description

The explosion of new technologies and rapid globalization of media cultures has become increasingly significant in our understanding of the shape of the modern world, constantly challenging social concepts of space and time and dislocating fixed identities and subjectivities. The aim of this book is to bring together an analysis of some of the structural changes occuring in the media such as the development of new media technologies, issues of economic penetration and changing relations of ownership and control with an exploration of the way the development of the media affects questions of national and global identity, autonomy and democracy, ethnic and sexual identies. These issues will be explored through both theoretical and empirical sections in an attempt to combine the likely themes of cultural sociology over the next decade: media, globalization, identity and citizenship.
