Description

Have you ever been hiking and wondered how some trees grow into fantastic and sculptural shapes while ones right next to them grow straight? Enos A. Mills wrote this story to explain why and how that happens. It did not see a wide release in the 1920s when he wrote it, but his widow, Esther Burnell Mills, published a small volume in the 1930s and gave them to return guests at Longs Peak Inn as Christmas presents. We have republished the story and added two speeches he gave when he was a Government Lecturer on Forestry for the USDA, illustrated with historical photos, and letters from people of note in Enos's era.

Author Biography:

Enos A. Mills is widely regarded as the "Father of Rocky Mountain National Park." The author of several books, he was a naturalist, conservationist, nature guide and innkeeper.
