Description

· Ukiyo is the new album from NZ composer John Psathas & Portuguese percussion maestro Pedro Carneiro.

· Ukiyo is a very different, unexpected turn for Psathas, in that for someone considered a classical composer & who has won 3 Best Classical Album Awards at the NZ Music Awards, Ukiyo isn’t classical at all!

· Ukiyo is percussion-based, & while it contains moments of explosive energy characteristic of Psathas’ work, overall the album projects an intimacy & moodiness that reveals another side to the famous composer’s music.

· Ukiyo also features NZ percussionist Jeremy Fitzsimmons alongside the group Stroma (conducted by Hamish McKeich) & Tim Prebble, whose touching remix of One Summary closes the album.

· Ukiyo was recorded & mixed by the award-winning Steve Garden at The Shed & is released by Rattle.

· John Psathas is the most internationally performed of NZ’s composers & his album View From Olympus (2006) spent 4 weeks locked at the #1 spot on the NZ classical charts.
